Received as budwood from CCPP, 2011, who received this accession from Valencia, Spain, 2007.

Parentage/origins

Probable origin is reported to be Corsica, France, around 1970. the introduction was from budwood from the eastern plain of Corsica.

Notes and observations

Translated to mean Maltese half blood orange, it is the variety most closely associated with Tunisia, which is the sole producer and exporter. It is regarded by connoisseurs in Tunisia as the best sweet orange in the world. Is said to fully express its full potential grown on the peninsula of Cap Bon. This is an old variety of unknown origin, which belongs to the same group as the blood oranges that include Sanguinelli Moscati. It's of average size (100 to 180 grams) and has a slightly oval shape, easily peeled, smooth skin, tender flesh, juicy, and has particularly pleasant sweetness balanced by good acidity. The Maltese demi sanguine makes it's red blood color on the side of the fruit exposed to more sun, which is where the term "half blood" comes from. Season is reported to be from the beginning of January until late March and early April.

Another accession of 'Maltaise (demi-) sanguine is maintained as PI 654873 (RCRC 4085) and its variant 'Boukhobza' is maintained as PI 658351 (RCRC 4156). 'Maltaise demi-sanguine' is a very old and well known cultivar and information on it is abundantly available on the interwebs.
