Received as budwood from the UCR Breeding program, 2002.
'Rufert' is a nucellar "pollen-bearing and mainly non-navel form" of seedlings from 'Ruvel' (a nucellar "pollenless navel of unknown origin") found at the CES, Riverside, by HB Frost in the early decades of the 20th century (Frost, 1948, p 839).
Rootstocks of accession
Carrizo citrange, Swingle citrumelo
Season of ripeness at Riverside
November to January
Notes and observations
It is not known at this time whether 'Rufert A' and 'Rufert C' differ from each other. See comments in The Citrus Industry, 1948, 1:839 implying that 'Rufert' was a type of seedling rather than a variety. The consensus was that only one example or accession of 'Rufert' needed to be maintained. Therefore, 'Rufert A' (RCRC 4141) was retained and 'Rufert C' was de-accessioned effective 11-2006.
