Notes and observations

8/2006, RRK: Originally from Australia and arrived in California first in 1929.Sometime before 1960 it was sent to Florida as a cutting which was planted as Haiwassie farm. In 1962, seedling selection planted at USDA Hiawassie Farm near Leesburg, Florida and since then has been propagated by grafting. Smooth Flate Seville apparently originated in Australia as a sour orange-pummelo hybrid. As a fruit, it is similar to "Poorman". As a rootstock, it is said to have properties similar to sour orange but with improved resistance to CTV. It has some use as a rootstock in Florida but it is untried in California. A defect for rootstock used is a low level of nucellar embryony (60% or less). Note: Source history as shown is most probable; however, there is a slight possibility that this was re-introduced as seed from Australia in 1963.
