Notes and observations

This is an experimental rootstock in South Africa. Information received from A.T.C. Lee, Manager, Citrus Improvement Programme, South African Co-Operative Citrus Exchange, Ltd., states: Rootstock selected by Dr. McClean at the Buffelspoort Research Station in the late 1950s/ early 1960s. It is showing promise in an experimental planting at Malelane Nursery in the Eastern Transvaal Lowveldt. This planting consists of 10 year old trees of grapefruit, navel, Ortanique, lemon, and Valencia- no incompatibilities have been observed to date. Ferdie Esselen, owner of Malelane Nursery, says that MXT germinates well and buds easily in the nursery; in the field it is very vigorous (like Minneola parent) and has not as yet shown to be susceptible to Phytophthora. Furthermore, it induces good fruit size and internal quality. (This information received in Februrary 1986).
