Notes and observations

Medium-sized fruit; yellow rind; oblate with depression at apex; rind moderately rough, thick; seedy; medium-large hollow core; flesh light yellow, coarse but juicy, flavor sweet; not attractive fruit.

Polyembryonic. Notes from T. Tanaka in CITROLOGIA, pg. 31, Univ. Osaka, Japan, 1961: Shunkokan means "spring illumination" orange. Tree of vig. habit, its branches erect, lvs med, thick, winged, hardy. Fr smaller than Natsudaidai, little pulp, coarse grained, fairly juicy. Notes from W.P. Bitters' 1963 trip to Japan: No species. Av sized fruit, ht 6.7 cm, wid 8.3 cm, oblate shaped, sl rough, stem end rounded, stylar end flat, rind 8.9 mm, core av size, solid, flower white, 30-40 seeds, many aborted, low polyembry. (?), lv av, accuminate, raised veins, petiole av, av wings. A little different, migh try as a rootstock, especially lemons. This accession was heat treated about 1975 for moving out of tristeza quarantine to Lindcove. Subsequent Lindcove nucellar block tree was the bud source of 12A-31-1, 2--EMN 1986.

3/8/1988, EMN: Medium sized fruit; yellow rind; shape oblate with depresseion at apex. Rind moderately rough & fairly thick. Seedy; medium-large hollow core. Flesh light yellow, coarse but juicy. Flavor SWEET! Fruit smaples collected for conference with WPB- Stand by.

5/27/1988, EMN: Most fruit still on tree, appear to be re-greening. Some granulation, not an attractive fruit.
